Stars, Stripes, and Screams: 4th of July Horror Movies You Must Watch

It is a long weekend so why not enjoy your weekend at home with some movies.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

With the new movie coming out, it’s the perfect time to watch the original I Know What You Did Last Summer. Set in Southport, North Carolina, on July 4th, four friends are driving back from a celebration when their car hits a man. Instead of calling 911, the group decides to dump the man’s body in the water. Vowing never to speak of the incident again, they try to move on with their lives.

But a year later, their past comes back to haunt them—each teen is stalked after receiving a chilling note that reads: I know what you did last summer.

Culture Shock

Culture Shock is part of the Into the Dark series on Hulu—a collection of horror films, each themed around a specific holiday. The film follows Marisol, a pregnant woman crossing the border from Mexico into the United States in search of a better life. She arrives in an American town that seems to be everything she hoped for. But soon, her idyllic new life takes a dark and terrifying turn.

The Purge and The Purge: Election Year

Okay, so technically… The Purge movies don’t take place on or even near the 4th of July. The annual Purge holiday occurs from March 21 to March 22, lasting 12 hours—from 7 PM to 7 AM—during which all crime, including murder, is legal. Introduced by the “New Founding Fathers,” it’s a grim celebration where survival is the only goal. The Purge has grown into a full franchise, including six films and a TV series.

So why are these two films from the franchise being mentioned here? First, the original Purge lays the foundation for the entire series and establishes the disturbing concept. But The Purge: Election Year stands out for its heavy use of 4th of July-style imagery—most notably the eerie, neon-lit Lady Liberty mask—which gives it a strong visual connection to Independence Day, even if the timeline doesn’t match.
